Fluorochemicals Business
We don’t make air-conditioners. We make them cool!
Overview
Set up in the year 1989, SRF’s Fluorochemicals Business (FCB) drives its work through the sale of refrigerants, pharma propellants, and industrial chemicals.
SRF is the only Indian manufacturer of ozone-friendly refrigerants such as F 134a and F 32.
Manufacturing
We started our journey in Fluorochemicals in 1989, manufacturing refrigerants at our facility in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan, India. In the early part of our journey, SRF collaborated with some of the leading global chemical technology developers that included Allied Signal in 1989 for CFCs and HCFC, and Elf – Atochem in 1995 for Chloromethanes. Over the years, the company backward integrated into manufacture of critical intermediates required for refrigerants, such as hydrofluoric acid, chloroform and trichloroethylene.
In 2015, SRF acquired the Dymel® HFA 134a/P regulated medical pharmaceutical propellant brand from DuPont™ along with the technology to convert our technical grade of F 134a to the propellant grade. This made us one of the few manufacturers of Pharma grade HFA 134a/P in the world, which is used in Metered Dose Inhalers as a propellant.
In 2017, SRF acquired Mexichem’s HFC-125 assets and the technical know-how on an exclusive basis. The company relocated the assets to India and set up the facility for manufacturing HFC-125 at its Chemical complex in Dahej, Gujarat. With this acquisition, SRF gained the unique advantage of manufacturing all three major HFCs, namely HFC 134a, 32 and 125, which are marketed under the company’s FLORON® brand. It has also become the only Indian company to have fully integrated blending capability to offer HFC 410A and 407C to its customers, thereby positioning itself as one of the very few, best-in-class producers in the world.
Product Innovation and Safety
We are continuously working on the way our products and services are designed, manufactured, distributed, consumed and disposed to ensure least environmental impact. We have developed new products such as our own in-house, lower GWP, HFC blends to replace R 22 and R 404A.
SRF’s Fluorochemicals Business has also filed product patents for HFC blends.
Research and Development
SRF has always been at the forefront of major fluorine-based refrigerant gas transitions set by regulations, from the Montreal Protocol to the Kyoto Protocol in 1997, and today’s commitment from the industrial countries to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases. SRF has a dedicated in-house team for product and process development with an ever-growing number of patents to its credit.
Building on its in-house R&D capability, SRF has over the years received critical acclaim for developing indigenous technology to manufacture products such as Halons (now phased out as per Montreal Protocol), F 134a and F 32, PTFE grade of F 22, Trichloroethylene and Perchloroethylene.
Furthermore, SRF’s R&D teams are also committed to developing the next generation of fluorinated gases and has set up a pilot plant to manufacture HFO 1234yf. This breakthrough initiative will make SRF one of the few technology developers in the world to manufacture HFO 1234yf using indigenous technology, which is expected to find increasing use in car air-conditioning systems globally in future. In addition, the in-house technology will also allow SRF to manufacture, brand and sell HFO 1234yf in India and in global markets and develop other HFO refrigerants in future.
